Most of the time, joining a new team is difficult at first. Especially those who have not worked in teams before, or have less interaction with people – this is more of a problem. Many people take some time to adjust when they are part of a team at the beginning of their career. - These are very normal things.
After joining a team as a new member, you will find that the existing members have already developed a relationship among themselves. Naturally, they won't have much of a relationship with you on the first day
But there is nothing to be disappointed about. It takes time to understand and build a good relationship with new people. And everyone is a little more careful at work.
Some teams will welcome you as their own at first. There will be no problem. And some teams need a bit of intelligence and time to make their place.
There are ways to become trusted and loved by people on a new team. By following which you can easily get closer to them. As a result of which your own work will be done well as well as team work will be much better.
Whether you're a team member, or a team leader – these tips will help you work properly as part of a team.
Let's find out, 5 tips to adapt yourself well in the new team:
01. Don't rush
Don't rush to influence the team. Especially if you are hired as a new team leader - it's best not to try to make too much of an impact at first. True leaders always keep one thing in mind: team members are the team leader's core strength.
If the team members are not sincere to the team leader, then that leader will never become a competent leader. Don't think that you are the leader or efficient at first when you join the team. Most people prefer emotion over logic. So if you become likeable as a person first, everyone will value your words and actions. Try to create an environment where they want to listen to you from their heart, rather than forcing them to listen. Instead of following you out of coercion or fear, members should follow you with sincerity. Take some time to become everyone's favourite.
But that doesn't mean you'll accept anything unethical or unfair to bond with team members. Express your opinion with conviction. It is also one of the ways to get respect from people.
Try to get a good idea of what the team's current environment is like right from the start. Observe the understanding and working environment among other team members. Don't rush this matter. If you get it wrong, it will be difficult for you to adapt to the team.
02. Prioritize each member
It is a very important step to fit into a team well. Do not get too close to a particular member or a few members within the team. It will alienate you emotionally from the rest of the team.
Establishing a good rapport with all team members early on is therefore very important for team integration. You need to get to know each person on the team well and build a relationship with them.
It will give you great advantage as a team leader or as a general member. Create an environment where everyone can talk to you openly. Talk to everyone about work separately. Try to understand everyone's attitude and way of thinking.
If you talk to everyone separately, you will get to know each person very well. This is not possible in group meetings. But group meetings are also important enough. Because, overall, there is no alternative to get an idea of how the environment of the team is. How is the relationship with whom in the team, what is the real position of a member in the team - you can understand these things well in group meetings. And for this you have to observe everything very carefully.
Prioritize each member to get a detailed understanding of each person on the team and build understanding with them. Only then will you be able to easily adapt to the team environment.
03. Listen and respond to everyone on the team with genuine interest
Not just in teams, but in any form of communication, there is no substitute for listening to the other party with interest, and responding in a relevant way.
In addition to giving your own opinion, ask for the opinions of others. Listen with real interest to what they have to say, and give your detailed opinion after thinking about it. A common mindset of people is that those who value their words and thoughts - they also value them.
If joining a new team as a team leader, ask each member of the team to know different things in the first team meeting. Listen carefully to their statements, and answer them in a relevant manner. This will leave other team members in no doubt about your sincerity. They will also start thinking of you as a trustworthy and reliable leader.
Listening carefully to others, and showing interest in their interests, is one of the easiest ways to build good relationships with people and make friends. Use this method as best you can.
04. Understand what you want, and what is being asked of you
When you get a chance to talk to everyone on the team, try to explain what you want to do as part of the team. Also, try to understand what is being asked of you.
If joining a team as a team leader, be clear about your plan and what you want from everyone in the team meeting. Ask everyone for their opinion on your plan.
Try to find out what the team's main goals are, and how they have worked so far – what difficulties they have faced – everything. Then you will have a better idea of what you need to do, and what others need to do. This way the people who hired you on the team – and those who are currently on the team – also understand what they want from you.
05. Keep talking at all times
There is no substitute for consistency in word and deed to gain and maintain acceptance in the team.
To be honest, to get respect and acceptance in any field one has to match words with deeds. Otherwise it is impossible to be faithful to people and earn their respect.
Any team expects this from all its members. If you can't communicate, the whole team will suffer because of you. You should always work with this in mind.
In the first case, ask for some responsibilities yourself, if necessary, and finish the work ahead of time. This way, the rest of the team will quickly accept you as one of their own, and will have more confidence in you to take on responsibilities.
And if you are the new leader of the team, and if you can convince the rest of the team that you are sincere in your work, and that your words match your work - then they will already respect you. Also, they themselves will be more careful about keeping their word. This one quality of yours can quickly earn you a solid place in the team.
